by Benjamin Mihajlov

In order to enhance your vertical jump training and learn how to jump higher, you must know what you are doing and do the right exercises. Until you have achieved a certain fitness level, you should not engage into an intense jump training program.

Your fitness level can only improve if you overload your body, which is pushing your body beyond what you are already doing. You should have some cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, good nutritious diet, muscle endurance, along with flexibility. After that, you can challenge your body with more advance fitness exercises to increase your vertical. When you reached an adequate fitness level, your will be ready for an intense vertical jump training program.

Training Exercises That Increase Your Fitness Level

1) Aerobic (or Cardiovascular) Exercises

Aerobic exercise (which is repetitive movement of large muscle groups over an extended period of time) will produce cardiovascular endurance. Examples of aerobic exercises include swimming, rope jumping, jogging, and playing basketball.

2) Enhance Muscle Strength

Muscle strength is improved by applying resistance to a muscle group. Lifting weights is a good way of improving muscle strength. Calf exercises, squats, lunges, are some examples in increasing strength for jumping higher.

3) Improve Muscle Endurance

When the muscle repeats movement over a period of time, muscle endurance is created. Muscle endurance increases in conjunction with muscle strength. With regular exercise, your muscles burn energy more efficiently and endure overloading for longer time. Running long distance for a long period of time is an example for building endurance.

4) Increase Joint Flexibility

Joint flexibility refers to the range of motions (ROM) the joint can undergo as limited by the joint’s structure and surrounding connective tissues. Warming up and then stretching your calves, hamstring and quad muscles are important activity in preventing injuries and increasing your fitness level. Joint flexibility can also give dramatic increases in vertical leap height.

5) Daily Nutritious Diet

A good healthy diet promotes faster recovery and is important for your body to repair itself. Avoid eating junk food or sugars, and make sure you diet includes protein, good carbs and fats, along with vitamins. Drinking plenty of water will also enhance your growth and ability to handle an increase load of exercises.

6) Reduce Your Body Fat

If you are overweight, you should concentrate on building muscle and reducing that extra fat. Limiting your caloric intake, eating healthier foods and doing vigorous exercises will assist you in losing that excess weight.

Plyometric exercises, along with the previous steps, will help you jump higher. Plyometric training develop quick twitch muscle fibers needed to increase your vertical. Many athletes omit these exercises, resulting in them not drastically increasing their vertical jump.

Advantages to Outstanding Pitching Mechanics

June 26th, 2009
by Dan Gazaway

There is no doubt that the greatest pitchers who enjoy the longest careers have solid pitching mechanics. Not only do these pitchers understand that throwing the baseball the right way adds years to their career; they know they are not as prone to arm injuries. Here is a short list of some of the benefits of throwing properly.

When a pitcher can use the right technique they minimize the risk of injury to their throwing arm. It makes perfect sense as to why it would decrease chances of injury, even if we take the science of pitching out of it. You see, most pitchers throw too much with their arms and not with their bodies. When every part of their body is working in sync with each other and working in the right direction they have the right kind of momentum moving forward. Pitchers should really get a lot of their power from their legs, hips and shoulders.

The pitchers with proper mechanics will also enjoy the benefit of throwing faster. It is important to note that a long stride is part of throwing the ball correctly. When a pitcher shortens their stride they decrease their momentum, therefore they also decrease their velocity. It also makes perfect sense that a pitcher who throws faster than others doesnt just rely on his throwing arm for velocity.

Improvement in Accuracy: If you are repeating the same correct movements each and every time you pitch; you will then be able to find more accuracy in all of your pitches. Painting the corners! Also, with better mechanics, all of your momentum goes toward your target which is home plate bettering your chances of throwing strikes.

Another important advantage of throwing with better technique is that all of your other pitches will be much more effective. You cant throw great off speed pitches, or any pitch for that matter, without first understanding and implementing better mechanics into your throwing. A common practice for many pitchers is to change their arm angle and arm slot each time they throw another pitch. Not only does this tip off the batter, it also isnt healthy on your arm and it makes it difficult to become consistent in any delivery.

Scholarship Grants or Financial Aid?

June 26th, 2009
by Owen Jones

Just what is the real cost of a college education and is there a financing scheme available? Well, lets face reality - a college education is really very expensive, causing a lot of parents alarm when their children are considering going to a community college or a state university.

There are a lot of things that go to make up the total cost of a college education and the tuition fees are just a rather small part of the whole story of going to college. Some everyday expenditures include meals, transport, housing, spending money and other sundry fees, which, when added up can create a significant portion when financing a college education.

Nowadays, a lot of families, even those belonging to the upper class, think about applying for financial aid. College grants and scholarships are a very good kind of financial assistance. Grant and scholarship programmes do not require the students or even their families to pay back the monies given.

These scholarships are of two kinds: (1) these scholarships are given according to financial need, and are given depending on the financial inability of the student and their families as a whole to pay for the education, and (2) scholarships based on merit, for example the talent of the student in sports is the main consideration. A students academic ability falls under the merit-based college grant and scholarship system too.

Sometimes, college grants and scholarships combine the merit and need criteria to ease the whole financial aid process. Numerous students and their families are looking for this kind of financial aid. However, college grants and scholarships are limited in number although there is a growing number of students year after year.

Qualifying students can get into federal and a number of state scholarship programs. Some of which are the following:

Federal or National Pell Grants ” this is a program, funded nationwide, which is intended to give assistance to any qualified undergraduate student pursuing post-secondary schooling. Grants and scholarships of this type are given to those who have not yet finished a baccalaureate degree.

The value of the grant can vary every year and will depend a lot on the financial requirements of the student, the expenses that will be incurred while attending the chosen university or college, and the availability of funds from the national government. This type of grant will create an opportunity for students to succeed in securing financial aid from the national government.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant or FSEOG ” this is a scholarship for ongoing undergraduate students who have exceptional financial needs, but not all students qualify for this type of grant. It will depend on the circumstances of the student and the amount of funds in the school concerned.

Another form of financial aid that students and families can get is student loans. However, this type of financial assistance must be repaid. The financial needs of the family should be considered thoroughly to avoid paying very high interest rates.

It is also a must to understand all the terms of the lending agencies such as the schedule of repayment and interest rates, before signing up.

Work study is another form of financial assistance which calls for students to work to sustain themselves during their college stay. Work study is commonly carried out on campus and is the most typical form of financial aid in all of the universities and colleges in the USA. Usually, the students will work for schools for ten to fifteen hours a week.

Scholarships, grants and other kinds of financial aid to acquire a college education is really multi-faceted, confusing at times, and even down-right exasperating. However, the good thing is that a college education is a non-refundable and non-toxic kind of investment in the student’s future!

However, not all that many students can afford a college education, which is why many students work hard during their academic life in order to get a college scholarship. Some students also train hard at sports in order to be discovered by college scouts and be awarded an athletics sports scholarship. Therefore, if you want to get to college but you dont have sufficient money, you should work hard academically or you should train hard at your game.

Basically, there are three types of college scholarship grants that you should consider going for. These grants can be given to college students and to soon-to-be-college students. The three types of college scholarship grants are athletic scholarship grants, academic scholarship grants and departmental grants. Each of these college scholarship grants has its own criteria that you should consider before applying for before the grant that you want.

Academic Scholarship Grant ” This type of scholarship grant is awarded to students who are eligible for GPA. Some colleges offer this grant to students who have achieved a very high academic performance even before they enter college. You have to remember that academic scholarship grants are awarded to students who have received honours in school. That is why you should study hard in your school life in order to get this type of scholarship grant.

After you have been given this kind of scholarship grant, the college will need you to keep up a top rating. If this is not achieved by the end of the term, probational status will be given to you until your grades have risen to the necessary level. If this is not achieved, this kind of scholarship grant will be stopped.

Athletic Scholarship Grant ” There are also scholarship grants awarded to athletes who have performed well in their chosen sport. This kind of scholarship grant is the kind of scholarship that very many students apply for. This is because athletic scholarship grants dont necessarily require you to achieve high academic grades. You only have to excel in your chosen sport in order to be discovered by a scout and put on a scholarship.

Departmental Awards ” this sort of grant is provided to students who have excelled in a particular department. The departmental grants are awarded to students in order to keep students in that particular department.

Those then are the three type of scholarship grants that you can claim. If you dont have the wherewithal to finish your college course, then you should study hard, excel in sports, or be good in a particular department.

Always remember that a college education will be what determines what your future will be. With a college education, you can make your dreams come true.

Bonuses for Pitchers Who Have Great Mechanics

June 20th, 2009
by Dan Gazaway

There is no doubt that the greatest pitchers who enjoy the longest careers have solid pitching mechanics. Not only do these pitchers understand that throwing the baseball the right way adds years to their career; they know they are not as prone to arm injuries. Here is a short list of some of the benefits of throwing properly.

Most pitchers want to learn better mechanics so they decrease the risk of having an arm injury. They want their careers to last longer and know that proper technique will give them a better chance of doing that. When a pitcher uses their entire body as leverage as opposed to just their throwing arm, they will throw better and stay healthy.

Proper pitching mechanics allow pitchers to throw with more accuracy. It makes sense if you are generating enough movement in the right direction you will have the ability to have pin point control. Once you have the right mechanics, the key is to repeat those same movements so you can gain better control of each pitch.

More chances of success with off speed pitches: First and foremost, if your pitching mechanics change every time you throw something different, you are just tipping off the batter. Eventually the other team will catch on to what you are throwing and you will not last long. You will also find if you keep your glove out in front of your body, helping to maintain your balance longer, you will release the baseball further out in front of you causing more rotation on the ball. Of course, that can only happen if your wrist and forearm angles are correct at release.

The key word here is intense. Plyometric exercises center on the development of explosive movements in order to enhance muscular power. That is why most plyometric training programs are high intensity workouts. They are not really intended for novices or people out of shape. As such, the do not have the wide appeal that something along the line of low impact workouts. There are many different exercises one can perform. Often, they center on jumping onto, off, or over an object. Of course, a chair is one example as many different objects can be used in a plyometric workout. Also, it is not always necessary to jump up and down. Lateral movements are popular as well and are integrated into many different workout strategies. Over time, this will lead to the explosive power needed to succeed in competitive sports. It will also help the body develop a uniquely muscular appearance.

But, is it possible at all to devise a lower intensity plyometric workout? If you lower the distance needed to jump and cut down on the number of reps, you can craft a low intensity workout. However, the true benefit with plyometrics is found in the high intensity training. As such, picking up your training several notches is recommended when exploring plyometric exercises.

Pitching Mechanics Add Years to Your Career

June 11th, 2009
by Dan Gazaway

One of the greatest things to do as a pitcher is to be a student of the game. Study out of the greatest books ever written in the area of Baseball, even if it doesnt relate to throwing the ball better. One of the requirements is to study about proper throwing mechanics. Doing this leads to great success on the mound and you will extend years to your career if you implement the correct principals of throwing. Learning the right techniques will help relieve pressure on your arm. Here are a few pointers you should know about throwing the baseball correctly.

First of all, all of your momentum should be headed toward home plate. That means your head should not go back and forth and to and fro. If you bobble back and forth so does your energy. When that happens you will be hard pressed to throw strikes and you will place undue stress on your throwing arm. You need to learn correct balance and posture in your delivery.

A common mistake among many pitchers is having a stride that is too short. In order to have explosive power as a pitcher, you have to get your butt out there and explode to foot strike. Your stride should be as long as you are tall, meaning 100% of your height. Make sure you stay closed to foot strike and you dont cheat yourself by shortening your stride.

A question that I get asked often is how long a pitchers stride is supposed to be. The answer to this is as long as you are tall. It is imperative to stride 100% of your height as a minimum. If you arent striding this far yet, it is definitely something you need to work on so you can throw faster. If you have the combination of getting to foot strike quickly and a long stride you will have more power.

Some additional advice I would give you is to not listen to a pitching instructor who tells you to shorten your stride or to change your arm slot to a ninety degree angle. Only a couple pitchers in history have ever thrown with a ninety degree arm slot and have been successful. Coaches often make the mistake of seeing someone succeed and feel they have to help their players mimic the same movements the successful pitcher makes. Everyone is build differently and therefore throws differently. An instructors job is not to clone every pitcher they work with.

The main point in this article is for you to take some of this information and apply it. We want you to learn as much as you can about Baseball so you will be ahead of your competition and stay there.
