There is perhaps no mode of transport that is as romantic as traveling by train. Train trips are one of the oldest and most well-known ways of getting from A to B, and can be a spectacular way to see a country. You can take a train for a one-off trip, like going across the swathe of the US, or you can use train trips throughout your whole holiday, hopping on and off when you wish to see a particular site or city.
Trains do exist in most countries, but the frequency of their runs is not the same. Where the West is known for plenty of trains that run frequently, the African continent has trains that can provide only one point to get in at and to alight. Many of their trains run weekly only. It is advisable therefore, to take a peek at train timetables displayed on the World Web beforehand, and plan one’s journey (of course, all journeys need to be planned). If the Internet does not prove to be so helpful, there are always local shops which can provide guides displaying plenty of information such as the stations where the trains depart from, the dates and timings of each journey, and so on.
I have been on very few train trips where I have been ticketless before getting on board. No railway companies like passengers to get on without usually purchasing a ticket beforehand. In India, you may just get away without paying if you enjoy riding on the roof, but in many countries fines are high for without a valid ticket. The same rule applies for second-class passengers trying to ride in first-class carriages without a proper ticket.
There have been so many developments in this area that train travel has become incredulously cheap! Most developing countries even offer first-class travel at affordable prices. Of course, some areas of Europe and the US cannot boast of the same. Also, with the extra comforts provided, the journey is bound to be more pleasurable! Additional benefits provided by the railway authorities are discounted tickets. Such tickets can be bought online or at the railway station itself. One is given a discount on this ticket if he/she is of a certain age or purchases the ticket in advance. Other factors playing a role are duration of the journey, time and day of the week when the journey is to take place. This type of facility becomes convenient should a traveler wish to tour the entire country. The price paid for the ticket is definitely worth it! A word of caution though. It is possible to be cheated if one is not acquainted with all the facts. So a travel agent is the best one to purchase such a ticket for you in such cases.
Food is very important when going on a long train journey. Long-distance trains have a dining car on the train itself or fix up catering services that supply food on board at the right times, to the passengers. In case these facilities are lacking, there are always restaurants at railway stations. By keeping track of the route of the train, it is possible to know where and when one can get food. Of course, passengers with sensitive stomachs have to be careful what they eat and drink, because it is most unpleasant to be sick on a “moving” journey!
People tend to make their train journeys unpleasant by lugging too much of luggage with them. They believe that porters being there to help with the luggage, it is quite alright. What they forget is that the journey itself can become unpleasant if one has to sit, surrounded with loads of luggage. It is universally believed that one should travel light. What is absolutely necessary is to be carried, bearing the climatic conditions and the duration of the journey in mind.
Most of the countries around the world have trains and a railway network. So if you one is an adventurer at heart, one need not just stay on the beaten track, one can go off track and explore the unknown.
