Improve Your Pitching Mechanics This Season
Saturday, May 30th, 2009In order to throw affectively and get noticed by more than just a few spectators, it is vital that you learn proper pitching mechanics. Not only do mechanics add years to your career, they will also help prevent arm injuries. If you throw properly, you will learn how to throw with your entire body as opposed to throwing solely with your arm. Doing this will increase your pitching velocity.
Find a qualified pitching instructor: Find a pitching instructor who knows a great deal about pitching mechanics. There are many instructors that have played at high levels even in the major leagues who have a great knowledge of pitching mechanics, however, they dont know the first thing about teaching. Make sure the pitching instructor you choose has plenty of testimonials and has a proven track record for success.
If you find a good instructor he will give you effective drills to work on. Most of the drills should be focused on proper mechanics when you first start. Make sure you are consistent with those drills and you repeat the correct motions each time you do them. So many times pitchers do the drills and repeat the wrong thing over and over again just to say they have done their drills for the day. It has been said that it takes about one thousand repetitions to create a habit and only a couple of wrong repetitions to ruin it. Be careful that you are not careless doing those exercises.
A related though on the above is to make sure you give yourself time to learn the new skill sets your coach is giving you. I work with many athletes who feel that they should pick up the necessary movements immediately and without much work. This is simply not true and will damage your progress as a pitcher.
Every time you pick up a baseball you should throw with a purpose. Once you know what drills you are to do, and your personal throwing techniques have been identified; it is time to constantly work on them. Throwing with a purpose means just that. You dont just pick up the baseball and start throwing anymore. You want to throw with the intent to improve some area of your mechanics, or to work on a different pitch. You dont just go out and play catch just to play catch. You should have a clear plan as to what you are trying to accomplish when you throw; even with your friends.
