Improve Your Pitching Mechanics This Season

by The Pitching Academy

In order to throw affectively and get noticed by more than just a few spectators, it is vital that you learn proper pitching mechanics. Not only do mechanics add years to your career, they will also help prevent arm injuries. If you throw properly, you will learn how to throw with your entire body as opposed to throwing solely with your arm. Doing this will increase your pitching velocity.

Find a qualified pitching instructor: Find a pitching instructor who knows a great deal about pitching mechanics. There are many instructors that have played at high levels even in the major leagues who have a great knowledge of pitching mechanics, however, they dont know the first thing about teaching. Make sure the pitching instructor you choose has plenty of testimonials and has a proven track record for success.

If you find a good instructor he will give you effective drills to work on. Most of the drills should be focused on proper mechanics when you first start. Make sure you are consistent with those drills and you repeat the correct motions each time you do them. So many times pitchers do the drills and repeat the wrong thing over and over again just to say they have done their drills for the day. It has been said that it takes about one thousand repetitions to create a habit and only a couple of wrong repetitions to ruin it. Be careful that you are not careless doing those exercises.

A related though on the above is to make sure you give yourself time to learn the new skill sets your coach is giving you. I work with many athletes who feel that they should pick up the necessary movements immediately and without much work. This is simply not true and will damage your progress as a pitcher.

Every time you pick up a baseball you should throw with a purpose. Once you know what drills you are to do, and your personal throwing techniques have been identified; it is time to constantly work on them. Throwing with a purpose means just that. You dont just pick up the baseball and start throwing anymore. You want to throw with the intent to improve some area of your mechanics, or to work on a different pitch. You dont just go out and play catch just to play catch. You should have a clear plan as to what you are trying to accomplish when you throw; even with your friends.

How to Throw Better This Season

Pitching Mechanics are important to know considering they can add years to your pitching career and decrease the likelihood of injury to your arm. Pitching Mechanics are helpful, if done properly, because you utilize your entire body to throw the baseball as opposed to merely relying on your arm for velocity.

The first thing you should do to learn more about how to throw the baseball correctly is to find a quality pitching instructor in your area. You should find an instructor who knows a great deal about pitching mechanics and doesnt try to clone every pitcher he teaches. There are many pitching instructors, who seem to know what they are talking about, but you take a closer look and they dont know much. Avoid the pitching instructors who just play catch with you while they try and teach; it just doesnt work to well.

After you find your instructor they will most likely give you drills to do. Make sure your instructor doesnt give you any drills that require you to do any repetitive robotic like moves. You want your delivery to be smooth and not so jumpy, if you know what I mean. Once you know what drills you are supposed to do, make sure you are consistent with them. Most of my students will see an increase in their velocity after a few lessons because they will start throwing with their body more instead of just their arm.

One connected suggestion is to make certain that you spend ample time on the drills your coach gives you to work on. Too few pitchers simply think that they can pick up the movements in a week or so. This type of thinking will surely stunt your progress and hinder your effectiveness as a pitcher.

The point is, throw with a purpose; working on something daily to improve youre pitching mechanics.

Everything You Need In Knowing How To Jump Higher

by Benjamin J. Mihajlov

If you really want to jump higher then you have to become more knowledgeable about the subject. Better vertical jumps means your game can improve dramatically in whatever sport you play. However, it doesn’t take an athlete to work on these exercises. To be honest, as long as you want to build leg strength and power, we suggest everyone giving it a try.

You have to start by actually building the strength. There are hundreds of different ways to do this, but when the increase in jumping abilities will be evident. All of your workouts should include a little strenuous training that works all of the muscles in the lower part of your body.

A great place to start is doing squats, lunges, and calf raises. Even though you may think that cardio training wouldn’t help, it actually can make all the difference. So make sure you add in any running, jogging, or biking whenever it’s available. Doing so will definitely add leg strength and increase your jumping abilities. In fact, there is a good exercise that can help right in the comfort of your own home. All you have to do is try jumping while you are in a seated position.

We do suggest you go out and find someone that can help you. It doesn’t have to be a difficult transition, but it’s a good idea to have some help. If you can get someone, then you’ll be able to stay free of injury and build the leg strength you desire without harm. If you can’t find anyone, then make sure your exercises are fit for a solo session.

The best approach for learning how to jump higher is a multi-faceted approach. A multi-faceted approach allows you to focus on targeting every aspect of the vertical jump to get the explosion and strength you need. A multi-faceted approach will introduce you to nine aspects that will allow you to not only increase your vertical jump, but also to allow you to be agile and quick while jumping.

The approach should include information about how to improve your form. Form improvement on its own can greatly increase your vertical jump. Just fixing your form could lead to an improvement of 2 to 4 inches.

The approach should not skimp out on teaching you about proper diet. Diet can also play a role in how you perform during a jump. Adjustments to your diet can help you to greatly improve your jump.

Plus, it’s important to read deeper into each exercise and perform them correctly. Too many times we’ve seen individuals miss a crucial part to an exercise that means the difference between gaining or losing leg strength.

Proper technique includes an understanding of plyometrics. Plyometrics is basically jump training, so you can see why it is important to understand. A good program will ensure you understand proper plyometrics.

Last but not least you can also do some resistance training. Again, if you aren’t sure how this works, then make sure you know how it works. Resistance training gives you the opportunity to strain the muscles in a positive way. You will hold positions longer and build the strength in your legs tremendously. If you can train your muscles correctly, it all starts with understanding how they work. If you do this you’ll be able to get more power out of your legs and gain jumping abilities.

Lastly, you have to understand your muscles and how they work. This involves understanding flexibility and learning how to train them. This will help you to understand the best way to use your muscles and work your muscles to get a good vertical jump.

When it’s all said and done, you can find yourself a well rounded program if you take the time to understand it all. Our goal is to help you gain more inches regarding your vertical leaping abilities. In order to do this you’ll have to train hard and right. If you don’t, you’ll end up straining your muscles and causing an injury.

The 30 Yard Drive- Is the 30 Yard Drive Really Your Goal?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009
by Mitch Durkin

I absolutely love going to the driving range. You see everyone plunking down cash to get a yellow wired bucket filled with golf balls. The loud crash of the balls falling into your very own bucket and the typical two left at the end, that hit the top, and drop aimlessly to the cement bouncing away as you scurry to grab them. Ahhh.dont you just love the range!

Then everyone marches down to inspect each stall, waiting for the one that just feels right. You know- THAT feeling. Then they try to find the rubber tee that feels right. Somehow they think this will make the perfect game. They un-mount bags, grab their drivers and start the golf day. Well- this is what the garden variety of golfer does anyway.

After a few swings for warm-up, they grab the ball, place it carefully on the tee and WHAP! There it goes. They try to hit the ball as far as it will go. Shooting for that 30 yard drive again is the only think on their minds. Does this sound familiar?

We are all guilty of jumping right into the 30-yard mindset and swinging as hard as we possibly can. We want that long drive. We want to impress our friends. Lets face it, were all human and we buy what the marketing giants tell us. They claim that the goal of a great golf game is that 30 yard drive. But, my fellow golfers, as we seed after the elusive long ball, we lose our balance and begin to play our game off our egowhich is the opposite of what anyone should be doing if they truly want to shoot great golf game.

Now dont get me wrong, hitting a long drive has its advantages.but if you can only control it some of the time (the swing technique for a 300-yard drive is NOT EASY..and is prone to tons of errors)whats the point?

At the end of the day, I beg of everyone to place emphasis on control when driving the ball, not on length and swing speed! Swing within your limitslength will increase one spoonful at a timenot this step on it method (as the advertising agencies love to tout). You will find your ball in the fairway, you will have clean approaches to the green, and you will shoot lower scores…..

A decent education is the most important investment you will ever make in your life. It is something that you really must have in order to get a good job with a very good salary. A college education, more than anything else, will land you the position that you really want with a salary that will be more than enough to live out your everyday life comfortably.

This is why it is important for you to know that a college education can cost a lot of money. A college education can be very expensive indeed. Most companies require a college degree from their applicants these days. And, you also know how good jobs are really hard to find. But by having a college degree, you will have a much better chance of getting the job you want.

However, not that many people can afford a college education. This is why many students work hard during their academic life in order to get a college scholarship. Some are also working hard at sports in order to be spotted by college scouts and be offered an athletics sports scholarship. So, if you want to get to college but you dont have enough money, you should work hard academically or you should work hard at your game.

Fundamentally, there are three types of college scholarship grants that you can consider applying for for. These grants can be given to college students and to soon-to-be-college students. The three types of college scholarship grants are athletic scholarship grants, academic scholarship grants and departmental grants. Each of these college scholarship grants has its own stipulations that you should consider before applying for before the grant that you desire.

Academic Scholarship Grant ” This type of scholarship grant is given to students who are eligible to receive GPA. Some colleges offer this grant to students who have achieved an exceptional academic performance even before they enter college. You have to remember that academic scholarship grants are awarded to students who have received honours in school. This is why you should study diligently in your academic life in order to receive this type of scholarship gran

Once you have been given this type of scholarship grant, the college will require you to keep up a maximum rating. If this is not reached by the end of the term, probational status will be given to you until the grades have reached the required level. If this is not achieved, this kind of scholarship grant will be revoked.

Athletic Scholarship Grant ” There are also scholarship grants given to sportspeople who have performed well in their chosen sport. This kind of scholarship award is the kind of scholarship that very many students go for. This is because athletic scholarship grants dont necessarily require you to achieve high academic grades. You only have to be great in your chosen sport in order to get discovered by a scout and put on a scholarship.

Departmental Awards ” this type of grant is provided to students who have excelled in a particular department. The departmental grants are given to students in order to keep the students in that particular department.

These are the three type of scholarship grants that you can claim. If you dont have the cash to finish college, then you should study hard, excel in sports, or be good in a particular department.

Do not forget that a college education will be what determines what sort of future you will have. Armed with a college education, you really can make your dreams come true.

Having a Difficult Time Finding a Quality Pitching Coach?

Sunday, May 17th, 2009
by Nate Barnett

One of the greatest challenges parents and coaches are finding out in the Baseball world is lack of quality pitching instructors. Great ones are hard to find. Not only are there a lot of theories as to how you should throw the baseball properly; most of the instructors out there have the most difficult time trying to share that knowledge that they do know to most age groups. They are not great teachers. There are also those instructors who clone each of their students. Should you teach each pitcher the same way? Absolutely not!

Here is a list of a few things you should avoid when looking for a great pitching instructor in you area.

First of all, if the pitching coach has spent some time in the Major Leagues, Rookie ball and so on, do not assume they know what they are talking about. There are many who have natural talent with incredible arms, however most dont know the first thing about pitching mechanics; they only know what has worked for them. What has worked for them may not work for you. Everyone is build differently and not all of us share the same arm slot.

Not only that; if the instructor seems to know what they are talking about, are they a good educator? I have run into many retired Major League pitchers that are great people, but horrible educators. Some I know, understand pitching mechanics, but they have the most difficult time explaining or demonstrating the how toos of mechanics. Just attend a pitching camp or clinic in your local area and ask the boys that attend that camp what they learned that day and how they are going to apply it. They will be hard pressed to tell you anything valuable they have learned.

Steer clear of the pitching coaches who will try and teach your son different off speed pitches before they clearly understand how to throw a fastball utilizing proper mechanics. Until a pitcher understands proper pitching mechanics, they should not be taught any other pitch. When they do understand pitching mechanics and become somewhat consistent with their velocity and control of the fastball, one of the first pitches they should be taught is an effective changeup.

Last but not least; dont take lessons from an instructor who is behind the plate catching for you and trying to instruct at the same time. They are going to be watching the ball, but they will not be watching you closely to see what youre really doing mechanically. They may be able to give you a pointer or two along the way; but they cannot be effective instructors catching for you. They cant see what you are doing out of the corner of their eye.

There are some outstanding instructors out there, dont get me wrong! The great instructors are just difficult to find. Good luck in your pursuit of the perfect pitching instructor.

How To Use A Heart Rate Monitor Effectively

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
by Graham Allmanson

Heart rate monitors are wonderful tools that can help you to maximize your workout. However, as with most tools, if you dont use them correctly, you wont get the best results. So how do you use your heart rate monitor correctly? Simple, use the information you gather to design a workout regimen specific to you ” your body and your fitness level.

Before developing an effective workout routine, you should establish your resting heart rate. Resting heart rate is usually monitored when someone is at rest, but this can lead to a falsely inflated number as various things can affect your heart rate; caffeine, stress, and how recently you may have done any exercise. It is a good practice to measure your resting heart rate before you even get out of bed in the morning, before any environmental factors elevate your heart rate.

Then you will need to establish your maximum heart rate. There are two easy ways to do this. If you have been sedentary subtract your age from 220 if you are a man; subtract your age from 226 if you are a woman. If you have been active already you should divide your age in half and subtract this from 205; this formula applies to both active males and active females. Either of these formulas will give you a target for your maximum heart rate. If you want an exact measurement, you will need to have a lab stress test performed.

Once you have calculated your maximum heart rate you can set your workout targets. Generally you will strive to reach between 50 percent and 95 percent of your maximum heart rate. It is a good idea to create a chart of your heart rate percentiles in order to have those numbers readily available.

Some people like to have a trainer come in at this point to help them set up their workout plan, but that isnt necessary. It is a good idea to vary your workouts. Interval training has been proven to be very effective. Just remember to use your heart rate monitor to ensure that you are hitting the targets you set.

Regardless of how you devise your training program, you should make an effort to keep track of your workouts. It can be very helpful to have a record of what you have been doing and your level of fitness over time so that, if you want to change your workout, you can determine what has been most effective. Your heart rate monitor can provide a wealth of information.

It is also a good idea to monitor your resting heart rate. This will give you a good idea of your general fitness level. As you become more fit, your resting heart rate will get lower.

A heart rate monitor will provide you with a more accurate picture of your fitness level than your pant size. Sure you can note whether your fitness is improving by the effort you need to exert during your workout.
